NOW: Last-Minute Halloween Costumes

Did you know that most people spend $25 per costume, and upwards of $65-$70 in big cities just to get decked out for Halloween? Well, if you don't want to spend the money AND you've procrastinated and still don't have a costume, have no fear. Check out some of these ideas and links to sites with tons of fab ideas for every age!

COSTUMES IDEAS:
Gift: Take a cardboard box (one that will fit the child or adult; be sure it's above the knees so you can walk). Cut out holes for arms and your head. Cover the box with wrapping paper. Add bows or other details to dress up the gift, and then add a bow on your head. Optional: add a tag that says "God's Give to Men!"

Walk of Shame: Wear an oversize button-down, boxers, and heels. Tease your hair, mess up your makeup, and walk furtively through the party.

Cow-girl: Cute plaid shirt. Cowboy hat. Denim skirt. DONE!

Safari guide: white shirt, plus khaki pants and sneakers or boots. Also throw on a vest and binoculars around your neck. A hat completes the look.

Angel: dress in all white and pit stop at any Halloween store, Target, Walmart, etc. for some wings.

Zombie – Make holes in old clothes and rip edges on sleeves and bottoms of pants. Put some pale make-up on the face, darken the eyes with black eye-liner and use red lipstick to put fake blood around your mouth.

Politico (this is funny): Thanks to the Huffington Post, just get a piece of elastic and print out one of these masks!

5 Must Haves... for a Fashionable Fall!

Jennifer, founder of The Looks For Less
5 Must Haves... for a Fashionable (yet affordable) Fall
Meet Jennifer, founder of thelooksforless.com. I'm beyond thrilled to have to her share her five must-haves! I found her on Twitter about a year ago and I just adore seeing how she discovers affordable versions of designer lust-worthy finds. Jennifer said that her passion is high fashion, but there’s not much left in the bank after paying the bills, so she uses her creativity to help all us average, typical gals out there look fashionable... for less! ADORE!

Her blog covers everything from styling your favorite dress to creating distinctive looks, DIY projects, and of course (my fav!) celebrity and designer looks for less. Every post is infused with a bit of her own personal style, which ranges from contemporary to preppy to rock-star glamour.

Here, Jennifer shares with us, in her own words, her must-haves for Fall.. all under $50!

Anything with shearling-lined details
Shearling lined details are wildly popular right now; they're everywhere from fold-over boots to removable-coat collars. When I saw this shearling jacket I literally WOL (wowed out loud, and yes, I just made that up)! I jumped for my credit card, but then remembered my recent Forever 21 shopping spree and resisted the urge. I'm not sure how long my restraint will last, but note the effort! Beyond the fact that this is one of the coolest jackets ever with the faux leather, moto style, and shearling detail, would you believe that it is under $50!
Shearling Moto Jacket, Forever 21
Just $39.80!

Leopord Print
I just picked up the leopard print scarf from Affordable Scarves and it is an absolute must have! If you've read my blog for a while, then you already know that I've wanted to try the animal print trend, but have been a bit of a fraidy cat (get it cat? leopard? haha). I thought if I was ever going to attempt it, then I would try a super-small dose in the form of a super cool scarf! I've always thought that scarves were supposed to be worn with a pile of layers; however, I've seen so many pics of people wearing them with just a tank and jeans and love the look. I was wearing a black silk tank when this came in the mail, threw the scarf on over it, and it was a match meant to be. This leopard print scarf is super light and airy, plus it comes with a price tag of only $8.46!

Chunky cable knit sweater
Every girl needs a chunky cable knit sweater in their life and I have this exact one! I love it so much that I had to add it to this fall must haves list! If you've watched my vids, then you would have seen it in my Forever 21 Haul as well as my China Glaze Holiday Collection Review. Of course, these trends are not to all be worn together; however, this sweater would look great with the cargos! I love the huge open weave which is perfect for pairing with a colored tank underneath.
Ivory Chunky Open Knit Sweater, Forever 21
Just $24.80!

Gold boyfriend watch
So this next must have just upsets me! I just used a Bloomingdale's gift card that I had for years on a Michael Kors gold boyfriend watch that looks just like this "looks for less" watch! Actually, I got the Michael Kors Jet Set Watch in champagne and the watch for less looks more similar to the more expensive Michael Kors Chronograph Watch that I really wanted! So double dangit for splurging! Had I known that a super fab look for less was right around the corner, I would have used my gift card on something else! I'm seriously amazed that you can get an almost identical look to the Michael Kors watch for pennies compared to the original. Get the Michael Kors boyfriend watch look for less at ShockBoutique.com for only $30!

Green skinny cargos
Fashion these days is to not matchy-matchy and these cargos are an easy way to create that less than perfectly paired outfit as though you'd planned it that way! Take a top that you'd normally wear with jeans, and pair it with these cargos instead. Last week, I threw on an off the shoulder heather gray raglan sleeve top, and these skinny cargos perfectly finished the outfit. Not only is it a more interesting look compared to jeans, but it's also the perfect essential for adding a bit of the military trend to your wardrobe. These army green skinny cargos may be found at ArdenB.com for only $49.00!

Web Love: Fiverr.com

Where were we before Internet? It cracks me up what's out there. I mean, you can find anything and everything! My latest amusement: Fiverr.com. Have you heard of this?? It's a site where people share things they're willing to do for $5 (hey there, get your mind out of the gutter!).

You can buy or sell services, or just poke around the site to see the utter randomness people have for sale. I saw this site on The Nate Burkus Show and love it.

Here's some examples of what you can buy:
  • I will write a jingle for your company for $5
  • I will write and send a personalized note from Santa to your child for $5
  • I will prank call anyone as Arnold Schwarzenegger and wish them Happy Birthday for $5
  • I will read your fortune with Tarot cards for $5
  • I will make a tough decision for you for $5
OK, you get the idea. How fun, right? Worse case, you're only out $5! All that gets you these days is a footlong at Subway or a teeny vanilla latte at Starbucks.

Let us know if you take advantage of one of these five dolla deals!

      5 Must Haves: Kristi Peacock

      Kristi Peacock
5 Must Haves... for a Rockin' Road Warrior
      (or a weekend jogger!)
Meet Kristi. Not only is she gorgeous, a total sweetheart and a serious fashionista, she's also an inspiration! This chick runs marathons like it's nobody's business. She's been running long distances competitively for less than four years, getting totally hooked after her first 5K in December 2007.

In 2008 Kristi ran her first marathon in Washington D.C. for the Marine Corps. Marathon, and will be running it again on Halloween; her fourth marathon! She's also run four half-marathons; more 5Ks, 10Ks and 10-milers than she can count and ran her personal best of 3:34:07 at the 26.2 in Jacksonville to qualify for the Boston Marathon, which she'll be running in April 2011.

As you can tell, this gal knows what's up when it comes to running so we've recruited her to dole out some advice to the new and novice. She's currently on the board of the Palm Beach Roadrunners, and is a run club coordinator at Lululemon Athletica in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Here, Kristi tells you in her own words, her five must-haves:

      Good running shoes
No matter how far you’re going, from beginners starting at one mile to ultramarathoners trekking 100, good, fitted running shoes should be at the top of your list. There is not one shoe that is best for everyone, so visit a local running store to have them fit you based on the mechanics of your foot…whether you have a high arch, overpronate, etc. In Palm Beach County, Fla., Run & Roll at CityPlace, Fit2Run in Wellington or Running Sports in Juno Beach are all fantastic, and help by watching you stand and stride around the store or on a treadmill (a little embarrassing, but totally worth it!). I have extremely flat feet, so I swear by the supportive Brooks Adrenaline GTS 10…doesn’t hurt that in this latest version, Brooks finally made them good-looking too!
Tip: Bring an old pair of running shoes with you so they can analyze the wear and tear, and purchase shoes a size to a size-and-a-half bigger than normal since your feet swell when running.

      Hydration: Coconut water
Proper hydration is key to any sport, especially when running. Like running shoes, there is not one rule for everyone, so it’s best to test what product or amount works for you. That being said, I practically live off of coconut water to fuel my runs. I prefer it to Gatorade because it is an all-natural, low-acidic, low sugar way to consume electrolytes, and it’s packed with more potassium than a banana and most sport drinks, preventing cramping and aiding recovery. It can of course be found inside a coconut, but for a quicker and easier fix, stop at Whole Foods or Publix, for a carton of 100 percent coconut water like O.N.E. or Naked. Flavored options are available too, but they sometimes contain artificial juices or preservatives. Need even more hydration for longer runs? I like Crank’s e-Gels and Succeed electrolyte capsules.

      Lululemon Athletica apparel
Ever since I put on a pair of shorts from Lululemon, I’ve hardly been able to convince myself wear anything else when running. Not only are the clothes innovative from a fashion sense with the bright colors, plaids and stylish cuts, but they seem to be ahead of the game in the technology behind the design as well. The yoga-inspired tops and shorts are made from soft, breathable and quick-drying materials that reduce chafing and aid in comfort. Recent pick: I had been long opposed to anything skirt-like when it comes to running…just doesn’t seem to fit with the sport…but I recently got talked into trying one of the brand’s running skirts and I think I’m hooked. With light shorts underneath that have gripper elastic to keep them from riding up, plus pockets and air vents, this was probably the most comfortable bottom I’ve ever worn on a 22-mile run. I’m even considering wearing it for a marathon in D.C.!

      Tiger Tail or The Stick
As most runners can tell you, with the excitement and adrenaline of the sport comes a lot of nagging injuries. From IT band pain and sore calf muscles to tight quads and overused back muscles, sometimes stretching and icing isn’t enough. The Stick or Tiger Tail rolling muscle massagers look like specialized rolling pins and can work wonders to prevent or assist healing for all of these things. I especially like to use it the night before my long training runs and races, and have seen a big difference since I started.
TAGG tip: Search on Amazon for these products; there's different options based on your needs. And, even if you're not a serious runner we see these as hugely beneficial for anyone with tight muscles!

      Running buddy
I’ve been running all my life, but treadmills and long routes around town were just too boring for me when went beyond 13 miles and started training for my first marathon. My training completely changed for the better once I found a few running buddies and joined a running group. I prefer talking to music, so the conversations kept me going for miles, and you can’t deny that safety in numbers is always better, especially if someone needs help. If you don’t already have a buddy to tag along, check out a local running groups in town with friendly beginner groups to more advanced runs.
My choices: Palm Beach Roadrunners is one of the largest in the area with group runs at different lengths during the week, and Run & Roll at CityPlace and Lululemon at The Gardens Mall also offer runs from the store. Palm Beach Marathon Training is a good place to start if you want to make a few friends and get a training plan at the same time.

      Happy running!

      Quick Bites: Thomas' Bagel Thins

I'm originally from New York, therefore I loooooooovvvveeeeee bagels. I should create a video so you can see me screaming about how much I love a good bagel. While most bagels aren't fattening per say, they're loaded with calories and carbs. The average bagel can have anywhere from 270-400 calories, and countless carbs. I used to think it was worth it sometimes until I discovered...

      Thomas' Bagel Thins!

They come in three flavors: plain, 100% whole wheat and everything. And, rumor has it there's a cinnamon raisin one, too. Normally, I'm a 100% whole wheat kind-of-gal, but in this case the everything kind of rocks my world! For just 110 calories and one gram of fat, this thin is essentially the dough-scooped-out-with-all-the-good-stuff-still-there bagel. Plus, all three varieties come packed with 4-5 grams of filling fiber and a great, wholesome taste.

And, there's a million things you can do with these: go for cream cheese, onion, tomato and lox; turkey or roast beef plus hummus and veggies; pb & j; loaded with an egg or egg whites and a slice of cheese; and so much more.

Totally recommend these to you! Look for them at your favorite grocery store and share with us how you like your bagel thin.

      Now: Love your Body

      Tomorrow, Oct. 20 is....
      National Love Your Body Day.

Initially, I know... a little cheesy. But think about it.

I suggest for ONE DAY we -- all us gals out there -- commit to not saying one negative thing about ourselves. No, "ugh I look fat in this" or "my skin looks gross" or even, "she's so much thinner than me."

Love your body, who you are and the gorgeous package you're wrapped in.

Try to find and say outloud what you love about yourself... whether it's your collar bones, your perfectly flat ears, those toes that look so good with a fun-colored pedi and cute sandals, whatever it is.

According to the NOW organization, there's a whole list of things we can do and 10 ways to love your body...

Indulge, read, laugh, have good, we mean GREAT, sex. They're all important to making you feel fab about you!

      Fab Find: Fashion Playtes

In the process of making my custom tank.
After reading about this site in Redbook, we had to check it out for ourselves! Even though my daughter is not even a year old, the site still immediately piqued my interest! Fashionplaytes.com lets girls 5 to 12 custom design their own tanks, shirts, dresses, capris, hoodies and more.

If anything, it makes me yearn for my childhood (or wish I was super teeny tiny!) just so I can wear one of my own rhinestone-covered, peace sign-decked custom designs.

      My personalized label!
At Fashion Playtes, you can even add a personalized label featuring the name of the little gal's clothing "line." Freaking awesome, right? Prices start at $12; I designed a shirt for less than $30, which included the totally-worth-it five bucks for the custom label (see left). I venture to guess that you'd be loved for centuries with a cool gift like this, or better yet, hit up the web site WITH your favorite someone and design it together. Totally creative.

The only hard part is waiting the three or so weeks until your shipment arrives. Happy designing!

      Fab Find: Curling Iron Cover

I'm a flat iron kind of gal. Well, actually, I'm a frizzy, slightly puffy haired kind of gal, therefore I've become the flat iron kind of gal. It's been a g-dsend for years. While they're great at home and you don't have to worry about the heat (just remember to turn it off when you're done! I've had a few 'oops' days!), the hot iron can be a hassle when traveling. Until, I discovered Vera Bradley's "curling iron cover." I don't know why the brand has to be so specific but I'll take it regardless!

This cover -- in about two dozen fun, colorful patterns -- has a heat-resistant lining so as soon as you're done with it, you can stick your hot hair iron, or curling iron, in and be on-the-go. No more waiting for it to cool down or planning the order of how you get ready to give it enough time to cool off to room temperature before packing. For less than $20, it's one of the more useful purchases I've ever made. And, I also love the pop of color every time I use it. (PS: also a great gift this holiday season!).

To purchase: They're $17 on Vera's web site, though discontinued patterns can run you as little as $8.40! Plus, go through Ebates (that web site we're obsessed with because you get cash back on your purchases, plus $5 the first time you use it!) scores you an additional 3% back on your purchase. Free money!

Or, if you're an Amazon fan, check it out; there's about a dozen sellers with products starting around $15 so find the pattern you like best.

I'm salivating thinking about this coming my way in the mail!! My day is officially made.

5 Must-Haves: Tina van der Ven

      Tina van der Ven
5 Must Haves... for (stylish) Professional Success
Meet Tina. Totally professional. Totally stylish. As the marketing manager at Greenberg Traurig, P.A., she handles marketing and PR for the firm's Miami office, as well as the firm's global Environmental & Land Development practice attorneys.  A resident of Miami Beach with her husband Alex and dog Charlie, she's also super involved in the community, including serving as co-chair of Impact Circle (the young professionals group of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Miami) and mentoring two young girls for the past four years with Take Stock in Children.

Tina's constantly on-the-go, meeting with attorneys, clients, non profit board members, you name it. She has to look polished and sophisticated, yet always wants her personality to shine through.

Here, Tina shares her five must haves--

      Rockin' iPad case
For those who know me, I am obsessed with the color red. I get a ton of compliments on this iPad cover by Tuff-Luv  -- and it's great to travel with.  The color and design are gorgeous.  Forget the Gucci and Louis Vuitton cases -- this is affordable and tres chic.
Tuff-Luv iPad cover, $39.99 at Amazon

      Sheath dress
Elie Tahari and Michael Kors make the most amazing and unbelievable sheath dresses, which make all women look like vixens.  The perk is that you can dress them up or dress them down.  They are usually very lightweight and easy to travel with.  I could wear sheath dresses to work every day.  Other great designers for sheath dresses -- Banana Republic and Theory. Here's a Michael Kors steal and an Elie Tahari splurge.

      Fun pair of black heels
As my husband can attest, I could probably blow my entire salary on handbags and shoes. Specifically, high heels because they make us look leaner and taller. Splurge: I just bought a pair of Manolo's at Neiman Marcus Last Call at Sawgrass, that were originally $900 and I bought them for $380. Nordstrom also carries some amazingly affordable black heels. I bought a pair of Enzo Anglioni's two months ago (see pic) that I receive major compliments on. These shoes are not only fun, but very comfortable. I'm wearing them most days from 9 am - 9 pm and totally pain-free at the end of the day.
Enzo Angolioni mielee pump, Nordstrom, $89.95

      Gold jewelry
I am going through this phase of wanting to attack my mom's dresser so I can wear all of her vintage pieces, especially those in gold. What better way to accessorize your dress and fun heels, then with great gold accessories? I recently scored a pair of obsession-worthy dangling gold earrings for $20 at Blush in Miami Beach and also gold and black bangles from Blush that I mix with my mother's vintage bangles. It's exciting to know that back in the day, your mom or grandmother or loved one was wearing the very same pieces!

Bronzer... and mascara (we'll let her have a 6th must have!)
I cannot live without my Bobbi Brown bronzer. Without it, I would look like a pale ghost. I have searched high and low for the best (tried YSL, Chanel, Laura Mercier) and this one is the winner. Why go in the sun and get wrinkles when you can put on some bronzer and feel great (and healthy?). The color is just right, does not make me look like an orange pumpkin, nor does it irritate my face. Two thumbs up!
      Bobbi Brown bronzer, Sephora, $33

Dior Show mascara... in blue: While I traditionally stay in the safe zone with black mascara, thanks to marathon viewing sessions of the Rachel Zoe Project, I'm now trying to think more outside the box, and have fallen in love with Dior Show in blue. The color is amazing -- it is a fun pop of color for the eyes-- makes you look more awake, and its edgy and different. Try it on its own, or put a coat over your black mascara to make your eyes really pop. {TAGG tip: trust her, it works! We've been hearing that, too!)

      Do it: Twitter

Do you tweet? Are you a member of the Twitter-verse?

I've been on Twitter for nearly two years though at first it was simply because of my job (I'm in public relations in my "real life"). But now, my personal self just loves it. While yes, it's another thing to keep up with, it's easy and totally worth it. I know most of my friends keep just to Facebook when talking social media but if you're not on Twitter, you're seriously missing out... in more ways than one.

First: mindless rants of celebs. Follow Lea Michelle from Glee, Kim Kardashian, Ellen DeGeneres, chef Bobby Flay, Alyson Hannigan and soooo many more! If you have someone in mind, chances on they're on Twitter. You can't read the latest crazy happenings of Kanye West on your Facebook account. The easiest way to find someone is to search on Twitter or even do a Google search (person's name, twitter). Trust me, it's fun to read what they're up on a daily basis. Makes everyone much more accessible. I tweet to Bethenney from the Real Housewives of NYC, the editor of Glamour magazine and more.

Second, want faster customer service? Tweet! Most big companies are on Twitter (ATT, Starbucks, Southwest, etc) so if you're not getting what you need send them a tweet with your complaint.  If you don't know they're name, no worries. Most companies also monitor Twitter for keywords and respond. I always get instant responses rom the big names.

Third, discounts! A newer trend, we've noticed companies are starting to provide discounts on Twitter. Check out Tiny Prints -- a fabulous modern stationary web site -- because when you become a 'fan' they respond with a coupon for $15 off $50 or more. Great deal. Plus, many companies like airlines, restaurants, etc offer Twitter-only discounts. I'm also among the first to know when a store is having a sale just because others are filling me in.

Fourth, instant news.... mixed in with the fun. Follow CNN Breaking News, USA Today, your local daily newspaper and your favorite news sites (they're all on Twitter, promise) for the latest news.

Fifth: I'm on there! Find me at @avggirlsguide. Best reason of all, right? :) That's why I saved the best for last.

And, that's just how it works. You put the @ symbol before someone's name when writing or responding to them and if you want to forward what you're reading about someone you simply stick a RT (re-tweet) in front of it. Want to send a personal message to someone? Just put a DM (direct message) in front of it. Fab Find Make-up at a great price!

Must tell you about two totally fab make-up lines with super deals today and through the holiday season.

Stila, a great line of quality make-up known for its gorgeous line of colors and awesome packaging, is starting its holiday gift packages. I'm a procrastinator, so it's a little early to be thinking about gift giving but never to early to take advantage of super deals on awesome products, be it for me or someone else.

You MUST check out some of these sales. For example, check out this "trendsetting in tokyo" palette that let's you sample all of these colors for just $10! $65 value here. And how adorable is the packaging?? Take this everywhere with me! Love the fun eye shadow colors and bright multi-use pink shade.

And, this Stila lip glaze set for just $25. Seriously? It's a $110 value that let's you sample every color all-season long. Totally loving this for me AND some friends, fam and coworkers. Every gal under the sun would love this as a gift.

There's so many other deals at Stila, too, in all price ranges. Totally worth roaming around there for a while to check it out.

Now, if you're going the more economical route, e.l.f is where it's at. It's super-discount make-up available online. I've ordered a few items once before and was very pleased with the eye shadows and nail polishes. Can't comment on the other items; it's been too long. However, for these microscopic prices, test out a few items and colors you've been wanting to without the worry that you're dropping $150 on who-knows-if-I'll-really-wear-that-color-after-I-leave-the-pushy-saleslady. Plus, today only -- for Columbus Day -- get free shipping with any purchases over $15 when you use the coupon code SHIP. That could be a dozen products to play with. Woohooooo!

Here's one product to check out: This limited-edition eye shadow palette is just $10! Hold on, we're having a moment. This is freaking awesome.  Plan a girls night around this... meet at someones house and everyone gets a different color combination!

Another deal? These hypershine lip glosses for just $1 that Allure magazine raved about in its Sept. issue. They were partial to the baby pink and lilac colors called fairy and joy. For one buck, that's about a penny per application.

e.l.f has so many more options, including mineral make-up and a new bath and body line with fruity scents to test out. Let us average gals know if you discover a favorite new product!

      Quick Bites: Baked brie recipe

If you're entertaining this fall, get ready to add this to your arsenal! BAKED BRIE!

It's my go-to app dish, not only because it's super easy to make, but because people literally go crazy for it. Like, crazy! It's assumed I spent a good deal of time in the kitchen preparing yet it's a 10 minute prep and about a 15 minute cook time. Awesome, right?

      inside of the baked brie

      Ingredients
      - 1 8 oz. round brie (though you can certainly buy the smaller one; just use less of the crescent roll)
      - 1 (8-count) can crescent rolls
      - preserves; I opt for raspberry
      - 2 tsp. toasted sliced almonds (to toast just stick in the toaster oven or on the stove top for a few minutes; keep an eye on them so they don't burn!)

      Directions
      - Lay out on a greased cookie sheet the unrolled crescent roll in a rectangle and delicately push together any loose seams.
      - Slice brie horizontally in half (best done when cold).
      - Put the bottom half of the brie in the center of the flat crescent roll and cover with a layer of preserves and toasted almonds.
      - Put the the top of the brie on and add another layer of preserves and almonds.
      - Fold up the crescent roll around the brie and just patch as needed. You want to be sure none of the brie is exposed otherwise it could leak while cooking.
      - Cook according to the crescent dough package, at about 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown.

*** For another variation, swap out the preserves, for 1 tsp. ground cinnamon, 1/4 cup raisins and the sliced almonds. YUM!

As you can see from the pic on the right, I have a dedicated "brie dish." I make this so much (and maybe people want it more?!) that some awesome friends D & E got this for me. Woohoo. Love.

      ENJOY!

5 tips... for the well-heeled hostess

      1. What are affordable/creative ways to decorate a table? Are there a few things I should always have on hand?

Linens: Whether its funky table runners and placemats or a classic hemstitch linen tablecloth and napkins, your tablescape begins and ends with linens. Prints are fun, but unless you have a huge assortment, they can be limiting and repetitive. It’s always a good idea to have tablecloths in several solid colors on hand (white and black are must-haves, followed by festive holiday colors and a rustic neutral, like burlap).
      Classic charger from
      Pier 1 Imports

Chargers: If you have the storage space, I’d pick up 12 each of silver and gold chargers. They’re made so inexpensively these days (look for them at Target and Pier 1 Imports) that it can cost less to own them than to rent them from your local party store. They instantly jazz up a white plate from your cabinet or caterer. A colored or detailed salad plate, simple flatware and crystal stemware will complete the look — all of which can be rented from your local party store!

develops these for clients to envision events.

Centerpieces: A clear vase never hurts to have on hand, but I love punctuating a table with an unusual centerpiece — perhaps a grouping of potted plants for brunch in the garden, piles of pumpkins and gourds for a fall feast, or a living table runner with tons of fresh pine branches, cones, and berries for a formal winter dinner.

Candles: A must for any dinner table is at least one votive candle between every couple to add warmth and ambiance. Be sure to use unscented candles to let the scents of your home-cooked meal take center stage.

      2. What are good dinner party themes? Wait, should I even have a theme?

      Safari-themed dinner party
A theme is like a road map — both for the guest and hostess. A theme can be as simple as a color scheme that begins with your invitation and is carried through your table setting and event decor. (Or it can be as elaborate as a Moroccan feast with oriental rugs, ornate lanterns, and live camels to greet guests at the front gate). Either way, choosing a theme will help you as the hostess to make decisions on menu, décor and entertainment, and it will help your guests know what to wear and what kind of party they’re attending.

Looking for simple dinner party themes? Pick anything that inspires you at the moment, like the season or a favorite color combination (we love aqua and cherry red). A special French dish you’ve wanted to prepare could lead to a romantic night in Paris, while a cool fall breeze could inspire an al fresco autumn feast with a farm-to-table menu celebrating the season’s harvest.

Q: At what size group would you recommend doing place cards? Any tips for placing people?

I adore place cards for luncheons and dinners with 12 and under — any group that fits at a single table. To me, it’s not so much formal as thoughtful.

Green inspiration board for Aime's clients.
By selecting where and with whom your guests are seated, you can help foster new relationships by mixing up couples and genders. I think for the most part, people like to know where they’re supposed to go. Giving them a reserved seat means your guests have one less decision to ponder, and it shows you thought of them in advance.

For groups where more than one table is involved, say 12 and higher, I’d recommend escort cards, which are displayed on a table near the entrance and direct each guest to their intended table (you can number your tables, or name them to go along with your theme). You may leave the seating open at their respective tables, or take it one step further and include a place card at each setting.

Q: I sometimes get stressed about what to serve. Any suggestions? Should I do a big dish like paella so it's a dish and side all rolled in to one or make individual pieces of fish, steak, etc.?

Whether you’re serving up a one-dish meal or a multicourse feast, it should be a menu you’re comfortable preparing, and one where the majority of the prep work can be done before your guests arrive. The scents of your home-cooked meal will permeate the air (yum!), and you’ll be relaxed and at ease to entertain your guests. No one likes a frantic hostess!

      Ina's 'perfect roast chicken.' Classic.

I love Ina Garten’s “Barefoot Contessa” cookbooks for party recipes. They’re elegant, easy and classic. Just be sure to do a trial run of your menu before the big event so you can adjust the seasonings to your taste the second time around.

Also, be sure and make a quick phone call or send a quick email to find out about your guest’s allergies or dietary restrictions. Pork and seafood dishes can be a huge hit — but not for the guest who’s left to side dishes and salad because you weren’t aware of his or her dietary restrictions.

Don’t let this thought limit your menu to chicken and potatoes — snooze — just make a few calls to cover your bases and let your culinary talents shine!

Q: Are there a few things I can always have in my pantry or fridge to be able to serve up if anyone comes over last minute?

It never hurts to keep noshes on hand such as blue-cheese stuffed olives, almonds and a nice cured sausage to slice up with some fresh cucumber. Club soda or sparkling water is a pantry staple, as are a few bottles of everyday wines (whites and reds) that go with an assortment of foods. Maurizio Ciminella of Amici Ristorante in Palm Beach is opening up Amici gourmet market this fall, and we can’t wait to see what treats he’ll carry for our party guests!
